Paramedic Swat Program Begins

On September 28, 1997, two El Cajon firefighter/paramedics began SWAT training to provide an added layer of assistance during police swat actions. By having paramedics available within a closer perimeter of a swat action, police officers and citizens are provided quicker service should they need medical attention.

Firefighter/Paramedics Kevin Schwab and Tony Aliano volunteered and completed the rigorous training that made them the first such team in the East County.

Their involvement in the program includes monthly training with police swat officers and responding to the scene of swat actions in El Cajon.

Disaster Search Dogs

Captain Mike Scott

El Cajon Fire Captain Mike Scott with his search dog.

El Cajon firefighter/paramedic Steve Swaney is the owner of a very special "man's best friend," Sherman the disaster search dog.

Sherman is a 2 1/2 year old chocolate lab who was rescued from the pound after showing that he possessed an incredibly high prey drive. He was found by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and placed in training at an expense of over $5000. Sherman's training consists of basic obedience and other behaviors that prepare him for search training.

Sherman searches for "live" victims of natural or manmade disasters such as: earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, bombings and building collapse.
